Conservation status. Critically Endangered [CR B1ab(iii)+2ab(ii)]. BDA.

Morphology and biology. Perennial with a creeping rhizome. Flowering stems 6–15 cm high, erect, glabrous, with leafy, sterile rosettes. Leaves 5–10 mm long, obovate, flat. Racemes with 5-lobed flowers, with white or reddish-yellowish pedicels. Petals 3–4 mm long, up to 3 times as long as the sepals. Stamens 10, with reddish-brown anthers. Follicles 3–5 mm long, erect and rounded at apex. Fl. V–VI, fr. VI–VII.

Habitats and populations. On dry, calcareous rocks, in the coniferous belt. The only population in Bulgaria is strongly fragmented, with low number of individuals and density.

Distribution in Bulgaria. Slavyanka Mt; ca. 2000 m alt.

General distribution. Mountains of SE Europe, westwards to C Italy.

Threats. The species is adapted to a specific habitat; restricted distribution; low population density and reproductive potential.

Conservation measures taken. The species is protected by the Biodiversity Act. The population is within the borders of Alibotush Strict Nature Reserve in Slavyanka Mt and in a site of the European ecological network Natura 2000 in Bulgaria.

Conservation measures needed. Study of the biology and options for stimulation of the in situ reproduction of the species; monitoring of the population state; elaboration of an action plan for the species.
