Conservation status. Critically Endangered [CR B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii)].

Morphology and biology. Fruit-bodies single. Cap up to 7 cm in diameter, hemispherical to convex, reddish brown, pinkish red to yellowish brown. Stipe cylindrical or tapering downwards, pink to carmine red, without net, not changing when bruised. Flesh yellowish in the stipe, whitish in the cap and often pinkish tinted, unchanging. Tubes and pores carmine red, unchanging when bruised. Basidiospores 5–7.5 × 4–5 μm. Mycorrhizal with oaks (Quercus).

Habitats and populations. Broadleaf woodlands with oaks (Quercus). Only one locality is known, unconfirmed since 1987.

Distribution in Bulgaria. Thracian Lowland (Zelenikovo village); up to 500 m.

General distribution. Seldom, mostly in S Europe.

Threats. Habitat loss and degradation due to forest practices and infrastructure development.

Conservation measures taken. Included in the Red List of Fungi in Bulgaria.

Conservation measures needed. Sustainable management and conservation of the habitat and of the known locality; survey and monitoring of the area of occupancy, the status of the populations and clarification of the threats.
