Podofomes trogii (Fr.) Pouzar

Conservation status. Endangered [EN B2ab(i,ii,iv)].

Morphology and biology. Fruit-bodies annual, 2–10 × 1–2 cm, composed of cap and stipe. Stipe central or lateral, 8–10 × 1–3 cm; sterile surface at first velvety, then glabrous, hard and rough, zonate, brown, red-brown to dark brown. Tube layer ochraceous, 2–4 mm thick; pores round to irregular, 2–4 per mm. Context hard, ochraceous, up to 10 mm thick. Basidia clavate, 25–32 × 5–6.5 µm, hyaline; spores ellipsoid, 4.5–6 × 2.5–3.5 µm, thin-walled, colourless, smooth.

Habitats and populations. On roots and stumps of fir (Abies) and spruce (Picea).

Distribution in Bulgaria. Rhodopi Mts (Central – Bezovo rest house).

General distribution. Europe, Asia (the Near East).

Threats. Habitat loss/degradation caused by agriculture (wood plantations), extraction (selective logging), and infrastructure development (tourism/recreation).

Conservation measures taken. Included in the Red List of Fungi in Bulgaria. The known locality is situated in a site of the European ecological network Natura 2000 in Bulgaria.

Conservation measures needed. Study of the population numbers and range; interpretation of species status through better understanding of the species biology and ecology; conservation of the habitat; study of the trends through monitoring.
