Conservation status. Endangered [EN D]. Bulgarian endemic.

Morphology and biology. Perennial, herbaceous, caespitose, light green plant. Stems 17–37 cm high, with basal bulbs and soft, canaliculate leaves. Panicle conical, lax, with long, slender branches and numerous spikelets with hermaphroditic flowers. Lemmas and glumes unequal. Fruit grain. Fl. IV–V, fr. V–VI. Wind pollination. Reproduction mainly by basal bulbs, that are light and are dispersed by wind, heavy rains and by animals.

Habitats and populations. Occurs in open, rocky places in spruce forests, on shallow, dry, soil, developed on gneiss rocks with marble veins. The population is mosaic, covering an area of 20 m2 with 80–100 individuals.

Distribution in Bulgaria. Rhodopi Mt  (west – Beglika Reserve); at 1600 m alt.

General distribution. Bulgaria.

Threats. Single population with restricted area and low numbers; forest fires; soil erosion; grazing.

Conservation measures taken. For protection of the habitats of the species the Biological Diversity Act requires establishment of protected areas in accordance with the regulations of the Protected Areas Act. The population is within the borders of Beglika Strict Nature Reserve and in a site of the European Ecological Network Natura 2000 in Bulgaria.

Conservation measures needed. To envisage monitoring activities in the management plan of Beglika Reserve and when necessary relevant conservation measures to be taken.
