Conservation status. Endangered [EN B2ab(iii,iv)].
Morphology and biology. Cap up to 7 cm in diameter, hemispherical, later convex to flat, velvety, red brown or brown. Stipe cylindrical or spindle-shaped, tapering, pale yellow. Flesh whitish, pale pink under the cap cuticle, unchanging when exposed to air. Gills bright yellow, thick, often branching, anastomozing, unchanging when bruised. Basidiospores 10–15 × 3.5–5 μm. Mycorrhizal with broadleaf trees.
Habitats and populations. Deciduous and mixed forests. Fruit-bodies appear solitary.
Distribution in Bulgaria. Balkan Range (Western, Central), Sofia Region (unconfirmed since 1933), Znepole Region, Pirin Mts (Northern), Rhodopi Mts (Central); up to 1500 m.

Threats. Not precisely known but presumably the limited distribution, forest cutting and the habitat decline.
Conservation measures taken. Species whose habitats need priority protection according to the Biological Diversity Act. Included in the Red List of Fungi in Bulgaria. Some localities are in the Central Balkan and Pirin National Parks and in sites of the European ecological network Natura 2000 in Bulgaria.
Conservation measures needed. Sustainable management and conservation of the habitat and of the known localities; monitoring of the populations.
