Conservation status. Endangered [EN B1ab(i,ii,iii)].

Morphology and biology. Cap semi-globose to broadly umbonate, 3–5(7) cm in diameter, lemon yellow, bright yellow with red brown scales, slightly viscid; margin at first coalescent with the stem trough a yellow cortina. Gills notched, light yellow to rusty yellow. Stipe cylindrical, 4–7 × 0.6–0.8 cm, concolorous with the cap, with a red-brown ring in the upper part, scaly under the ring. Flesh light yellow, reddish at the base of the stipe. Spores ellipsoid, 7–8 × 4–5.5 µm, light yellow, smooth. Fruit-bodies in groups. VIII–XI.

Habitats and populations. On dead wood often buried into the soil, in deciduous forests (alders – Alnus, birch – Betula, beeches – Fagus, aspen – Populus tremula), coniferous forests (fir – Abies, spruce – Picea, pines – Pinus), and urban parks; also common in ruderal habitats.

Distribution in Bulgaria. Rhodopi Mts (Eastern – near Vodentsi village, Haskovo district).

General distribution. C and N Europe.

Threats. Habitat loss/degradation caused by logging and fires.

Conservation measures taken. Included in the Red List of Fungi in Bulgaria.

Conservation measures needed. Study of the population numbers and range; better understanding of the species biology and ecology; conservation of the habitat; regular monitoring.
