Conservation status. Endangered [EN B2ab(i,ii,iii)].

Morphology and biology. Fruit-bodies perennial, effused, in stipe hollows, 2–3 cm thick; margin sterile, outlined, golden rusty. Pores round or angular, rusty, 4–5(6) per mm. Tube layer concolorous with the pores, 3–10 mm thick. Hyphal system dimitic. Basidia clavate, hyaline, 10–16 × 5–6 µm. Spores ellipsoid, pale yellowish to pale yellowish green, with an oil drop, 4–5 × 3–3.5 µm.

Habitats and populations. In stem hollows of poplars (Populus alba, P. ×canescens).

Distribution in Bulgaria. Thracian Lowland (Plovdiv).

General distribution. Europe.

Threats. Habitat loss/degradation caused by infrastructure development (human settlements, tourism/recreation, etc.).

Conservation measures taken. Included in the Red List of Fungi in Bulgaria.

Conservation measures needed. Study of the population numbers and range; interpretation of species status through better understanding of the species biology and ecology; conservation of the habitat; study of the trends through monitoring.
