Conservation status. Endangered [EN B1ab(i,iii)].
Morphology and biology. Cap at first semi-globose then bell-like to umbonate, 3–6(10) cm in diameter, red-brown, orange-red, fading, viscous, smooth. Gills free, white or light creamy. Stipe cylindrical, thickened at base, brown reddish, whitish in its upper part, with a reddish brown ring, soon falling off; fibrillose-scaly under the ring. Flesh white. Spores globose, 3.5–5 ×3.2–5 µm, smooth, colourless. Fruit-bodies single or in small groups. VIII–X.
Habitats and populations. On the ground, in coniferous (spruce – Picea, pines – Pinus) and deciduous (beeches – Fagus) forests.
Distribution in Bulgaria. Black Sea Coast (Southern – Ropotamo Strict Nature Reserve), Vitosha Region (Knyazhevska Gora locality), Rila Mts (Mokrata Polyana locality, near Govedartsi), Sredna Gora Mts (Western – Svinechki Dol locality, Lozenska Mt), Rhodopi Mts (Central – Momchilovski Dol Managed Nature Reserve).
General distribution. Europe, Asia, North America.
Threats. Habitat loss/degradation caused by stockbreeding, logging, infrastructure development (tourism/recreation), fires.
Conservation measures taken. Included in the Red List of Fungi in Bulgaria. Several localities are within the borders of Ropotamo Strict Nature Reserve and Momchilovski Dol Managed Nature Reserve, Vitosha Nature Park as well as in sites of the European ecological network Natura 2000 in Bulgaria.
Conservation measures needed. Study of the population numbers and range; better understanding of the species biology and ecology; conservation of the habitats; regular monitoring.
