Conservation status. Vulnerable [VU D2].
Morphology and biology. Perennial leafy liverwort forming dense yellowish green tufts. Stems 0.3–1.0 cm long with numerous rhizoids, some arising from leaf bases. Leaves reniform, erect, overlapping, slightly concave. Often with perianths and sporophytes. Gemmae lacking. Bisexual.
Habitats and populations. Plants grow in individual patches or mixed with other bryophytes on wet rock crevices, stream-banks, along melting snow beds in high mountain region.
Distribution in Bulgaria. Vitosha Region (Vitosha Mt – Dragalevsko Blato locality).
General distribution. Balkan Peninsula (Bulgaria, Romania), N and C Europe (Scandinavia, Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, Iceland, N Italy, Poland, European part of Russia, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland, UK), N and C Asia (Siberia, Japan, Himalayas, Kashmir), North America. Arctic-alpine species.
Threats. Global warming, climate drying up, air pollution, tourism.
Conservation measures taken. Species locality is in the area of Vitosha Nature Park, Torfeno Branishte Strict Nature Reserve and in a site of the European ecological network Natura 2000 in Bulgaria.
Conservation measures needed. The monitoring and the assessment of the trends in habitat changes will make possible a prognosis for population development and the undertaking of actions for species conservation.
