Galerina sphagnorum (Pers. : Fr.) Kühner

Strophariaceae

Conservation status. Endangered [EN B1ab(i,ii,iii,iv)].

Morphology and biology. Cap broadly conical to subglobose, 1.5–2 cm in diameter, ochre-brown, darker in the centre; radially furrowed when wet. Gills notched, slightly decurrent, wide, yellowish brown. Stipe cylindrical, 4–8 × 0.1–0.3 cm, ochre-brown, hollow, finely fibrillose. Flesh thin, light brown. Spores broadly ellipsoid, 6.5–8.5 × 5–5.5 µm, ochre-brown, smooth. Fruit-bodies single and in groups, VI–X.

Habitats and populations. Among moss (Sphagnum spp.) in peat bogs, swamps, and in the shore zone of mountain lakes. To date, four localities have been established with single specimens or small groups of 2–5 fruit-bodies.

Distribution in Bulgaria. Rila Mts (Shoumnatitsa locality, near Borovets; Mokrata Polyana locality, near Govedartsi), Rhodopi Mts (Western – Longourli locality, Chairski Lakes).

General distribution. Europe, Asia, North America.

Threats. Habitat loss/degradation caused by stock breeding, development of tourism/recreation infrastructure, aridisation.

Conservation measures taken. Included in the Red List of Fungi in Bulgaria. Some localities are in sites of the European ecological network Natura 2000 in Bulgaria.

Conservation measures needed. Study of the population numbers and range; better understanding of the species biology and ecology; conservation of the peat bogs; regular monitoring.
