Conservation status. Endangered [EN B1ab(i,ii,iii,iv)].

Morphology and biology. Cap conical, 0.5–2 cm in diameter, yellow-brown, rusty brown to ochre-yellow, radially furrowed, fibrillose. Cortina white. Gills ventricose, not very close, brownish. Stipe cylindrical, 5–12 × 0.1–0.3 cm, ochre-yellow, yellow brown darker at base; with transverse, gossamery white areas. Flesh tender, light brown. Spores almond-shaped, 9–11(12) × 5–7 µm, brownish, finely verrucose. Fruit-bodies single and in groups, VI–X.

Habitats and populations. Among mosses (Sphagnum spp.) in peat bogs, swamps, and the shore zone of mountain lakes. Up to date, three localities have been established with single specimens or groups of 3–11 fruit-bodies.

Distribution in Bulgaria. Rila Mts (Shoumnatitsa locality, near Borovets), Rhodopi Mts (Western – Longourli locality; Central – Chairski lakes).

General distribution. Europe, North America.

Threats. Habitat loss/degradation caused by stock breeding, development of tourism/recreation infrastructure, aridisation of climate.

Conservation measures taken. Included in the Red List of Fungi in Bulgaria. Some localities are in sites of the European ecological network Natura 2000 in Bulgaria.

Conservation measures needed. Study of the population numbers and range; better understanding of the species biology and ecology; conservation of the peat bogs; regular monitoring.
