Conservation status. Vulnerable [VU D2].

Morphology and biology. Perennial pleurocarpous moss, medium to comparatively robust. Tufts rigid, yellowish green, yellowish brown, or olive green. Stems to 30 cm long, regularly branched. Its upper part, as well as branch tips, hook-like curved. Leaves ovate-lanceolate to lanceolate, hooked. Nerve strong, ending in the narrowed upper leaf tip. Sporophytes rare, cylindrical and curved. Unisexual.

Habitats and populations. Plants grow in mires and seasonally moist areas with comparatively high limestone content, also in spring areas and wet banks, forming individual patches.

Distribution in Bulgaria. Pirin Mts (below Vihren peak), Rila Mts (near Ivan Vazov chalet).

General distribution. Balkan Peninsula (Bosnia, Bulgaria, R Macedonia) and Europe, Caucasus, NE, E and C Asia, N and S Africa, North America, NW part of South America, Australia, Antarctica. Boreal species.

Threats. Few localities, limited dispersal capacity, changes in habitat conditions.

Conservation measures taken. Populations are in the areas of Pirin and Rila National Parks and in sites of the European ecological network Natura 2000 in Bulgaria.

Conservation measures needed. Long-term study, assessment of trends in habitat changes, and prognosis for population development.
