Conservation status. Critically Endangered [CR B2b(ii,v)c(ii,iv); D]. BDA. Balkan endemic.
Morphology and biology. Perennial herbaceous plant. Stems many, well developed, 15-30 cm high. Basal leaves ca. 1 mm wide, usually persisting during flowering; stem leaves rigid; leave sheaths 4–6 times as long as the diameter of stem. Epicalyx scales usually 4. Calyx (10)13–18 mm long. Petals dentate, with a tuft of hairs on the upper side, dark pink above, yellowish or purple below. Fruit capsule. Fl. VI–VIII, fr. VII–IX. Reproduction by seeds.
Habitats and populations. Inhabits sunny, rocky and stony places on limestone in the coniferous forest belt and in the subalpine belt. Calciphilous species. Grows single or in small groups.
Distribution in Bulgaria. Slavyanka Mt, between 1400–2100 m alt.
General distribution. Balkan endemic (Bulgaria, NE Greece).
Threats. Unknown.
Conservation measures taken. Protected species according to the national Biological Diversity Act. The known localities are within Alibotush Strict Nature Reserve as well as in a site of the European ecological network Natura 2000 in Bulgaria
Conservation measures needed. To be included in Appendix 3 of the Biodiversity Act. Further survey of the size and the extent of the population and the threats for the species survival.
