Conservation status. Critically Endangered [CR B1ab(i,ii,iii)]. BDA. Balkan sub-endemic.

Morphology and biology. Annual. Stems 35–40 cm. Basal leaves up to 15 × 3 cm, numerous, obovate, acute, narrowed at base, coarsely dentate; cauline leaves small and bract-like. Capitula few to many, in a corymb. Involucre ca. 8 mm long; bracts linear-lanceolate, acute to obtuse, the outer ones very short, glabrous. Achenes 3–3.5 × 0.75–1 mm, brown, curved, fusiform, abruptly attenuated at apex, 10-ribbed; pappus caducous. Fl. V–VI, fr. VI–VII. Insect pollination. Reproduction by seeds, dispersed by wind.

Habitats and populations. The species grows in disturbed mixed oak forests, shrubs, stony grasslands. Population consists of single, dispersed individuals.

Distribution in Bulgaria. Thracian Lowland (Sakar Mt), Tundzha Hilly Country; from 100 up to 500 m alt.

General distribution. Bulgaria and Turkey (W Anatolia). Balkan near-endemic.

Threats. Localities are in areas with strong human activities that presupposes heavy negative impact on the species populations.

Conservation measures taken. The species is protected by the Biodiversity Act. Some localities are in sites of the European ecological network Natura 2000 in Bulgaria.

Conservation measures needed. Detailed study of the chorology, biology and ecology of the species, numerical strength and area of its subpopulations; long-term monitoring; collection of seeds for the National Seed Genebank in Bulgaria. If proven necessary – proclamation of a protected area for the species.
