Conservation status. Critically Endangered [CR B1ab(iii)+2ab(ii)].

Morphology and biology. Fruit-bodies consist of erect, thick, wavy gills, gathered into a rosette or in groups with a common base, up to 10 cm high and in diameter. Sterile surface tomentose or finely scaly. Hymenium smooth, pale, with contiguous whitish and brownish zones. Spores ellipsoid, 6–9 × 3.5–5.5 µm. VIII–XI.

Habitats and populations. On the ground in coniferous and deciduous forests.

Distribution in Bulgaria. Rhodopi Mts (Western – Mantaritsa Strict Nature Reserve).

General distribution. Europe, Asia, New Zealand.

Threats. Habitat loss/degradation caused by stockbreeding, wood plantations, development of tourism/recreation infrastructure, etc.

Conservation measures taken. Included in the Red List of Fungi in Bulgaria. The known locality is within the borders of Mantaritsa Strict Nature Reserve and in a site of the European ecological network Natura 2000 in Bulgaria.

Conservation measures needed. Study of the population numbers and range; better understanding of the species biology and ecology; conservation of the habitats; regular monitoring.
