Clitocybe vermicularis

Clitocybe vermicularis (Fr.) Quél.

Conservation status. Endangered [EN B1ab(i,ii,iii,iv)].

Morphology and biology. Cap at first convex, then flattened to funnel-shaped, 2–5 cm in diameter, fleshy red, light brown red to ochraceous in older specimens; margin wavy. Gills whitish, decurrent. Stipe cylindrical, slightly widened at base, 2–6 × 0.5–1.5 cm, lighter than the cap; fibrillose with whitish rhizoids at the base. Flesh whitish. Spores ellipsoid, 4–6 × 2–3 µm, colourless. Fruit-bodies in groups, III–V.

Habitats and populations. On the ground, in coniferous forests (pine – Pinus, Macedonian pine – Pinus peuce, spruce – Picea, and larch – Larix).

Distribution in Bulgaria. Znepole Region (Golo Burdo Mt), Pirin Mts (Northern – near Bansko and near Bunderitsa hut), Rhodopi Mts (Central – near Brestnik).

General distribution. Europe (N, C and W).

Threats. Habitat loss/degradation caused by logging, development of tourism/recreation infrastructure, fires.

Conservation measures taken. Included in the Red List of Fungi in Bulgaria. One of the localities is on the territory of Pirin National Park. Some localities are in sites of the European ecological network Natura 2000 in Bulgaria

Conservation measures needed. Study of the population numbers and range; better understanding of the species biology and ecology; conservation of the habitats; regular monitoring.
