Conservation status. Endangered [EN B1ab(iii,iv)].
Morphology and biology. Cap at first convex, then flattened to funnel-shaped, often irregularly folded, 2–4 cm in diameter, orange pink, orange, orange red to ochraceous, nude, smooth or finely velvety; margin irregularly wavy, deeply serrate. Gills thick, scattered, strongly decurrent, yellow pink to pink orange. Stipe cylindrical, often curved, sometimes eccentric, 1–3.5 × 0.3–0.5 cm, light orange or yellow orange. Flesh thin, tender, light orange in the cap, pale yellowish in the stipe. Spores ellipsoid, 8–10 × 5–7 µm, smooth, colourless. Fruit-bodies single and or in groups. VII–X.
Habitats and populations. On acid, sandy soils in deciduous, mainly beech and oak-hornbeam, forests.
Distribution in Bulgaria. Forebalkan (Vrachanski Balkan Nature Park), Balkan Range (Central – Stara Reka Strict Nature Reserve), Vitosha Region (Vitosha Mt – near Knyazhevo), Rhodopi Mts (Central – near Dedovo village; between Bryanovshtitsa and Vurhovruh huts).
General distribution. W, C and S Europe.
Threats. Habitat loss/degradation caused by logging, development of tourism/recreation infrastructure, fires, gathering for food, etc.
Conservation measures taken. Included in the Red List of Fungi in Bulgaria. One of the known localities is within the borders of Vitosha Nature Park; some localities are site of the European ecological network Natura 2000 in Bulgaria.
Conservation measures needed. Study of the population numbers and range; better understanding of the species biology and ecology; conservation of the habitats; regular monitoring.
