Conservation status. Vulnerable [VU B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii)].

Morphology and biology. Cap up to 20 cm in diameter, hemispherical to convex, silvery grey, later with ochraceous or olive tints. Stipe central, ovoid or clavate, yellow in the upper part, red or pinkish red downwards, with fine red network; surface blueing when bruised. Flesh whitish, blueing when exposed to air. Tubes yellow, pores bright red, blueing when bruised. Basidiospores 10–14 × 5–6.5 μm. Mycorrhizal with oaks (Quercus) or beech (Fagus sylvatica).

Habitats and populations. Thinned light oak or beech woodlands on limestone.

Distribution in Bulgaria. Black Sea Coast (Northern), Balkan Range (Western, Eastern), Znepole Region, Rila Mts; up to 1000 m.

General distribution. Europe, North America.

Threats. Limited distribution, forest felling, habitat loss and degradation due to intensive tourism and infrastructure development. Fruiting bodies do not appear every year and are destroyed by mushroom pickers.

Conservation measures taken. Included in the Red List of Fungi in Bulgaria. Some of the known localities are within protected areas (Sinite Kamani Nature Park) and in sites of the European ecological network Natura 2000 in Bulgaria.

Conservation measures needed. Sustainable management and conservation of the habitat and of the known localities; monitoring of the populations.
