Conservation status. Endangered [EN B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii)].

Morphology and biology. Fruit-bodies often in groups of 3–7. Cap up to 5–7 cm in diameter, hemispherical, convex or nearly flat, whitish with pinkish tint, pink to clay pink, sometimes blood red, not blueing when handled. Stipe central, cylindrical or tapering towards the base, in the upper part yellow, downwards yellowish orange, orange to orange red, surface blueing when damaged, without network. Flesh lemon yellow or yellowish in the stipe, more or less pink in the cap, blueing when exposed to air. Tubes and pores yellow, blueing when bruised. Basidiospores 11–17 × 5.5–8 μm. Mycorrhizal with oaks (Quercus).

Habitats and populations. On poor shallow soils in light thermophilous oak forests close to the seashore.

Distribution in Bulgaria. Black Sea Coast (Northern); up to 100 m.

General distribution. Bulgaria, France (Corsica), Italy (incl. Sardinia and Sicily), Spain.

Threats. Limited distribution, forest cutting, habitat loss as a result of the intensive tourism and infrastructure development. Fruiting bodies are often severely damaged or destroyed by the parasitic fungus Sepedonium chrysospermum.

Conservation measures taken. Species whose habitats need priority protection according to the Biological Diversity Act. Included in the Red List of Fungi in Bulgaria. The locality is situated in a site of the European ecological network Natura 2000 in Bulgaria.

Conservation measures needed. Sustainable management and conservation of the habitat and of the known locations; monitoring of the populations.
