Conservation status. Endangered [EN B2ab(iii)].

Morphology and biology. Cap up to 5 cm in diameter, hemispherical, convex or flat-convex, yellowish brown or brown, blueing when bruised. Stipe central, cylindrical, usually tapering downwards, yellow, often with fine red or reddish brown granules in the lower half, brown at the same base, surface blueing when handled. Flesh lemon yellow, quickly blueing deeply when exposed to air. Basidiospores 13–14.5 × 5.5–7 μm. Mycorrhizal with different broadleaf trees.

Habitats and populations. Oak, beech and mixed deciduous woodlands.

Distribution in Bulgaria. Black Sea Coast, Northeast Bulgaria, Vitosha Region (Vitosha Mt, Plana Mt), West Frontier Mts (Ograzhden Mt), Strandzha Mts; up to 1000 m.

General distribution. Europe (more common in the southern parts), North America.

Threats. Limited distribution, forest cutting, habitat loss and degradation. Fruit-bodies appear rarely, usually solitary and are destroyed by mushroom pickers or damaged by the parasitic fungus Sepedonium chrysospermum.

Conservation measures taken. Included in the Red List of Fungi in Bulgaria. Some localities are in sites of the European ecological network Natura 2000 in Bulgaria.

Conservation measures needed. Sustainable management and conservation of the habitat and of the known localities; monitoring of the populations.
