Conservation status. Endangered [EN B2ab(iii)].

Morphology and biology. Cap up to 5 cm in diameter, hemispherical to convex, pink, pinkish red or pinkish brown, not blueing when bruised. Stipe cylindrical to spindle-shaped, tapering towards the base, pale yellow, surface unchanging when damaged. Flesh whitish, pale pink under the cap cuticle, unchanging on air. Tubes and pores bright yellow, unchanging when bruised. Basidiospores 10–15 × 4.5–6 μm. Mycorrhizal with broadleaf trees, most often oaks (Quercus).

Habitats and populations. Inhabits thinned, light, oak and oak-hornbeam woodlands. Fruit-bodies appear solitary.

Distribution in Bulgaria. Black Sea Coast, Sofia Region, Sredna Gora Mts (Western); up to 1000 m.

General distribution. Europe, N Africa, North America.

Threats. Limited distribution, forest cutting, planting of non-native trees, habitat loss due to intensive tourism and infrastructure development.

Conservation measures taken. Included in the Red List of Fungi in Bulgaria. Some localities are in sites of the European ecological network Natura 2000 in Bulgaria.

Conservation measures needed. Sustainable management and conservation of the habitat and of the known locations; monitoring of the populations.
