Conservation status. Endangered [EN B2ab (i,ii,iii)]. BDA.

Morphology and biology. Cap eccentric, folded in irregular lobes, 5–15 cm in diameter, creamy to light brown, finely mossy to fibrillose; when dry margin dark brown. Tubes whitish, pale yellow to rusty brown when injured. Pores small, angular, concolorous with the tubes. Flesh whitish to brownish. Spores cylindrical to ellipsoid, 7–10(11) × 2.5–3.5 µm, smooth, colourless. Fruit-bodies single and in groups. IX-X.

Habitats and populations. On death wood in coniferous forests (spruce– Picea, rarely fir – Abies).

Distribution in Bulgaria. Rila Mts (Parangalitsa Strict Nature Reserve), Rhodopi Mts (Central – Byala Cherkva rest home).

General distribution. Europe, North America.

Threats. Habitat loss/degradation caused by selective logging, removing of dead trees from the forests; fires, etc.

Conservation measures taken. The species whose habitats need priority protection according to the national Biological Diversity Act. Included in the Red List of Fungi in Bulgaria. One of the localities is within Parangalitsa Strict Nature Reserve. Some localities are in sites of the European ecological network Natura 2000 in Bulgaria.

Conservation measures needed. Study of the population numbers and range; better understanding of the species biology and ecology; conservation of the habitats; regular monitoring.
